Website Checklist: 15 Things Every Indian Business Website Needs

A good business website does not need to be fancy. It needs to load fast, work on a phone, build trust and make it easy for customers to contact you. Use this 15-point checklist to review yours.

Many business owners in India say the same thing about their website: "We made one a few years ago, but nobody uses it." Often the problem is not that customers do not visit websites. It is that the site is slow, hard to use on a phone, or does not answer the questions customers actually have.

Your website is often the second place people check after finding you on Google, Instagram or a friend's recommendation. They want to confirm that you are real, see what you offer and contact you easily. Here are 15 things every business website should get right, grouped into five simple areas.

Speed and mobile

1. It loads fast, even on slow mobile data

Many of your visitors will open your site on a phone, sometimes on patchy mobile data. If it takes too long to load, they leave. Compress images, avoid heavy sliders and auto-playing videos, and choose reliable hosting. Google's free PageSpeed Insights tool shows how your site performs and what to fix.

2. It is designed for phones first

Text should be readable without zooming. Buttons should be big enough to tap with a thumb. Menus should be simple. Check your site on an ordinary Android phone, not just on a laptop.

3. It is secure (HTTPS)

Your address should start with https and show a lock symbol in the browser. Without it, browsers may warn visitors that the site is not secure, which immediately damages trust. Most hosting providers offer SSL certificates, often at no extra cost.

Clear content

4. Visitors understand what you do in five seconds

The first screen should say plainly what you offer, who it is for and where you serve. "Ayurvedic clinic in Ahilyanagar for joint and back pain" tells a visitor far more than "Welcome to our website".

5. Products or services are explained properly

Give each main service or product its own section or page, with what it includes, who it suits and what happens next. Answer the questions customers usually ask on the phone. This also helps search engines understand your business.

6. The language suits your customers

Write in simple words. If many of your customers prefer Marathi or Hindi, consider key pages or a summary in that language too. Avoid jargon and long paragraphs.

Easy contact

7. Contact options are visible on every page

Do not make people hunt for a way to reach you. Show your preferred contact method, whether that is phone, email, a contact form or WhatsApp, in the header or footer of every page.

8. A WhatsApp button, if you use WhatsApp for business

For many Indian customers, WhatsApp is the most comfortable way to ask a question. A click-to-chat button with a pre-filled message makes it easy. Make sure someone actually replies, and set an away message for after hours. If you plan to send customers messages later, collect their opt-in clearly, as WhatsApp's business policies require.

9. Forms are short and they work

Ask only for what you need: usually name, phone or email, and a short message. Test the form regularly to make sure enquiries actually reach you. Add simple spam protection so your inbox stays usable.

Being found on Google

10. Basic SEO is in place

Each page should have a clear title and description that mention what the page is about, and your location where relevant. Use proper headings, descriptive image names and alt text. These basics help search engines understand your site. SEO takes time, and nobody can guarantee a ranking, but a site without the basics starts at a disadvantage.

11. It is connected to Google Search Console and analytics

Google Search Console is free and shows which searches bring people to your site and whether Google has trouble reading any pages. An analytics tool shows how visitors use the site. If you use analytics or marketing cookies, tell visitors and, where required, ask for their consent first.

12. Your Google Business Profile links to it

If you serve local customers, your Google Business Profile and website should support each other, with the same name, address and contact details on both. Our guide to Google Business Profile explains this step by step.

13. Real proof that you are a genuine business

Show real photos of your shop, team and work. Add an honest About page explaining who you are. If you have genuine customer reviews, link to them on Google. Never use fake testimonials, stock photos pretending to be your team, or logos of clients you have not worked with. Customers notice, and it can create legal trouble.

14. The right legal pages

At a minimum, most business websites should have:

  • Privacy Policy: what personal data you collect through the site, why, how you protect it and how people can contact you about it. India's Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 makes this more important than ever.
  • Terms and Conditions: the rules for using your site and services.
  • Refund and Cancellation Policy: essential if you sell or take payments online. Payment gateways usually ask to see it before approving your account.
  • Cookie notice: if you use cookies beyond what the site needs to work.
  • Contact and grievance details: e-commerce businesses have specific obligations under consumer protection rules, including grievance contact information.
Note: Do not copy legal pages from another website. They should describe what your business actually does. For anything you are unsure about, take advice from a qualified legal professional.

15. Someone looks after it

A website is not a one-time job. Prices change, services change, staff change. Plugins and software need updates to stay secure. Backups should be taken regularly. Domain and hosting renewals should not depend on one person's memory. Decide who owns these tasks, whether that is someone in your team or a maintenance partner, and make sure the domain is registered in the business's name.

How to use this checklist

  1. Open your site on your phone and go through each point honestly.
  2. Mark each one as done, partly done or missing.
  3. Fix the quick wins first: contact buttons, HTTPS, opening hours, broken forms.
  4. Plan bigger changes, like a redesign or new pages, based on what customers ask most.

Costs for fixing or rebuilding a website vary depending on the size of the site and what it needs to do. Sometimes a few focused fixes are enough. Sometimes starting fresh is simpler.
